One Man’s Solution to the Unemployment Problem

By Doug Armey

Duo Blading by Ms. Glaze

There he is twirling and dancing on roller blades at one of the busiest intersections in Fresno.  The signboard strapped to his back reads “Cash for Gold” and advertizes a local jewelry store/ pawn shop.  He is skating, playing the guitar and singing along with his boom box.  People definitely see his sign though I don’t know if they visit the jewelry shop.  Day after day he’s out there doing his thing with all of his energy.

A few months ago, a local newspaper did a feature article on him.  He’s a recovering drug addict and alcoholic.  He was out of work and needed a job so he applied for this one.  He said he loves to be outside and roller blade.  He also loves playing the guitar, singing and entertaining people.  Seems like he created his dream job.  He thought outside the box and threw in a huge helping of enthusiasm .

Now, not only is he employed but he’s in demand from other merchants so his economic value is going up.

There are other people out on busy intersections with sign boards too but none have his excitement.  They wave their sign a little, he puts on a show.  They lean against their sign, he dances on blades.  They come and go, he’s there every day.  And now he’s famous and has a following.

What made the difference?  He threw himself into the job fully holding nothing back.  He’s enthusiastic about what he’s doing and he’s succeeding.  He solved his unemployment problem and became famous in the process.

Many people are unemployed today. For those who want work but can’t find a job it’s devastating.  But it goes beyond that.  How many others are in jobs they hate, just going through the motions?  How many are underemployed?

Maybe you’re one of them.  You feel like you’re caught in a trap.  You go to work because you have to but you hate it.  You are going nowhere, not moving up and the thought of spending the rest of your life doing what you’re doing is depressing.

What do you do? How do you move ahead?

For this young man he brought enthusiasm.  That’s what set him apart.

The bible says, “Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people, because you know that you will receive your inheritance from the Lord as the reward.” (Colossians 3:22-24, NET)

What makes the difference?  In a word enthusiasm.  Get excited about what you are doing.  Throw yourself into it.  Interestingly, the word enthusiasm means “in God.”  So when you are enthusiastic you are acting like God is in you empowering you and you are in his perfect will being blessed.  If that was really true you’d be pretty excited wouldn’t you?

And the result will be God will lead you to your inheritance, his blessings.  So when you act like God is blessing you already then he really does.

Frank Bettger, the best-selling author and successful businessman writes, “Enthusiasm is by far the highest paid quality on earth, probably because it is one of the rarest; yet it is one of the most contagious.”

Do you want to advance?  Get enthusiastic.  Do you want to make more money?  Get enthusiastic.  Do you want to sell more?  Do you want to move up in your career?  Well, you get the idea.

You may be saying, “But you don’t know my circumstances.  Where I work there is no way to be enthusiastic.  The job is boring.  My boss is rude.  My co-workers are unfriendly.  Management is unappreciative.”

Do you want a ticket out?  Get enthusiastic.

“How though?  I’m not the enthusiastic type,” you may be thinking.

You don’t need to have a life-of-the-party kind of personality to be enthusiastic.

First, focus on the things you do enjoy about your job. If you’re not working what things do you enjoy you could make a living at?  Create your work along the lines of those things.  The young man loved to sing and perform.  So he combined that into a job he could get paid for.  No it isn’t fun being outside everyday.  But he’s focusing on what he does enjoy and succeeding.

Second, act enthusiastic even when you don’t feel it. Smile, act happy.  Find things each day to get excited about.  And when you do, guess what?  You start to feel excited.  And then good things begin to happen.  Others notice.  They seem friendlier.  Sales go better.  Work is more fun.  You start getting promotions.

Third, trust that God is rewarding you already. He says he will give you his inheritance and that’s something to get excited about.  Plus when you focus on your coming blessings rather than your current problems you’ll be a whole lot more upbeat.  And with that focus you’ll have the courage to step out into new positions and follow your dreams.  That will lead to even more enthusiasm and blessing.  God wants his people in places of influence.  Why not you?

Has enthusiasm drained from your life? Are you just going through the motions?  Isn’t it time for a change?  Are you ready to experience real life again and get re-energized?  Get enthusiastic.  Start now!
