How Not to Blow Up Your Investments

When Pete called and told me, “Doug, nothing personal, but I’m moving my account,” I was shocked.

I’ve known Pete for years, helped him through difficult times with his business, and given him financial advice.  We struggled through 2008, like everyone else, talking regularly to help him weather the storms.  Now his investments were recovering nicely.

“Why Pete?” I responded.

“Well, there are a couple of guys locally who’ve developed their own software program for stock and commodity trading and they only lost three percent last year.”

Have you ever asked yourself, ” Are you nuts? You don’t know anything about doing this.”

Good questions.  I’ve asked myself these over the last couple of months as I’ve worked on putting this blog together.

I’ve enjoyed success in business, pastoring a church and investing over the last three decades.  I could retire though when mentioning that word to my wife she said, “Then I’ll use the other ‘R’ word—’Remodel.’’’  We’ve been there.  Don’t want to go back soon.

So why now start a blog?  Business is good.  I’m busy enough.

I’ve always lived with a passion for maximizing my life, accomplishing more.  When pastoring, I also wrote articles on church growth and had a daily radio broadcast.  That passion to write and share insights with others never left.  But I put it on hold while building my current business.

Business is at a place where I have a little bit more time.  So I researched writing again.  I looked at magazines but none were publishing what I want to write on.  My focus is outside the box.  So I thought about writing a book.  But book publishers require an agent.  Agents want you currently writing for magazines.  Same dead end.
